Paralympics Ontario Announces Name Change |
|
Toronto, ON
- Paralympics Ontario, whose mission is to promote parallel
opportunities for athletes with a physical disability in the province, revealed
its new logo and name “ParaSport Ontario”
at their annual awards evening Saturday.
In 2003, Sport
for Disabled Ontario signed a franchise agreement with the Canadian Paralympic
Committee and as a result became Paralympics Ontario. Due to a recent change in the Canadian Paralympic Committee’s trade mark
policy, Provincial Organizations are no longer permitted to use the term
“Paralympic” at the provincial level prompting the name change.
“We choose the
name ParaSport Ontario
because we feel the term ParaSport will become the defining word to describe
sports for athletes with a physical disability at all levels.” said Executive
Director, Cathy Vincelli.
The term
‘ParaSport’ refers to the English prefix ‘para’ meaning ‘alongside’ able-bodied
sport. The term is widely gaining popularity both internationally and nationally.
A new
corporate logo has been created that incorporates the look of the organizations
previous logo’s dating back to 2003. The logo sees the familiar abstract
depiction of a runner crossing a finish line within the trillium, a symbol of Ontario.
ParaSport Ontario will continue to support the development and
promotion of the Paralympic movement in Ontario
by providing elite competitive opportunities for athletes with a physical
disability through the Ontario ParaSport Summer/Winter Games. These Games are
the largest multi-sport Games in the province for athletes with a physical
disability and have a prestigious history dating back to 1976. The Ready
Willing and Able Program will continue to introduce young and newly injured
persons with a disability to Paralympic sports throughout the province. To date
the program has reached over 15,000 Ontarians in the four years of its
existence.
